Homemade candles are everywhere, if you go to handmade markets or look online at homeware stores you’re guaranteed to find a big selection of delicious smelling, funky looking, hand poured calming, decorative products. But it takes a little more than a bit of wax and a few wicks to turn candle making into a successful business.
Meet Natalie, a coffee loving, candle making, creative entrepreneur and the face behind Light My Fire Melbourne, a hand poured, soy wax candle business. After realising the typical 9-5 job wasn’t for her, Natalie decided to take her fate into her own hands. After purchasing a candle making kit to make special gifts for her family and friends she became absorbed in the process and soon after, Light My Fire Melbourne was born.
Tell me a bit about yourself. What are your passions, what’s your background, where are you from?
I was born and raised in Melbourne and I have a rather vast background. I’m a candlemaker/photographer/former childcare worker and entrepreneur. I believe that creating anything that makes someone happy is what my passion is. After finishing uni and working in a 9-5 job I stopped everything and wandered down the self-employment/business track and I haven’t looked back!
How did Light My Fire Melbourne come to life?
I bought a candle making kit last year to make a special Christmas gift for family and friends. The second I started the whole process had me fascinated and I was hooked. Pretty soon I had a crazy amount of candles and went to a market with a friend… the ball just started rolling and it became not only a passion but a business!
When did you start the business?
What challenges have you faced as a business owner?
The first challenge was absolutely putting myself into a business frame of mind whilst making. At times it’s also isolating, as well as having the knowledge every decision in the business is down to you. It’s not just one job, it’s managing every job within the business.
Did you always know you were going to be an entrepreneur?
It’s tricky, I guess I knew there was no job that I could fit myself into and be happy doing so. I had a short stint doing a regular 9-5 and I felt trapped. After that I knew it was down to me to create a job for myself. It just makes more sense to wake up in the morning, aiming for goals that are benefiting your own dream instead of someone elses.
What’s your advice to others who want to do something similar?
Research what it is you want to do and look at what works and what doesn’t work in other businesses. Find a need that people want and give it to them. It’s also really important to keep pushing every day! It’s easy to get complacent working for yourself. Surround yourself with like-minded people, it keeps you motivated and inspired.
What inspired you to start the business?
People liked what I made. If what I do makes someone happy it’s definitely worth pursuing.
How do you look after yourself while running a small business and doing everything else you do?
I have to walk every morning, rain hail or shine. If I don’t then I wont be in the right headspace to start my day. I’ve always got water on hand too (ok yes and coffee). Also I always leave extra time no matter how busy to catch up with friends at least one weekday each week.
What’s your favourite Light My Fire product?
Probably the large candles with the wooden lids!
